MMA MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. The earliest example of this type of fighting came from ancient Greece and was called Greek Pankration. These fights took place at the Greek Olympics and aside from gouging eyes and biting, anything could go. The brutality of the sport often left one or both of the opponents dead. Today's MMA has grown up since the first modern matches were held in Brazil. The Gracie family, brothers Carlos and Helios - invited people to their learning center to train for fights with a basis in Brazilian Jui Jutsui. When the Japanese heard about the techniques being used, they wanted to be involved. Helios made a name for himself defeating many of the great Japanese fighters. Japan started its own MMA competitions in the late 1980's and in the 1990's MMA moved across the ocean to the US. The Ultimate Fighting Championships gained popularity in the US and utilized a 'No Holds Bar' philosophy that resembled the Ancient Greek matches. When senator John McCain viewed the matches, he denounced them as human cockfighting and had them banned from PPV and sanctions in various states. However, that couldn't dampen the spirit of the UFC. It eventually came back with new rules and regulations that banned hair pulling, strikes to groins and head butting. Spike TV aired the 2005 Ultimate Fighter Reality TV show, which only spiked interest in the sport. Matches now run five rounds for title fights and 3-5 minute rounds for non-title fights. Athletes engage in several popular techniques that include 'sprawl and brawl, clinch fighting, ground and pound and submission grappling.' Fighters working to get in the best physical shape possible may use growth hormones to help achieve leaner muscles, increased endurance and overall better health. |
